Music Intent – What We Aspire for Your Child
At Green Park Community Primary School, we believe that music is a powerful medium for self-expression and personal growth. Our aim is for every child to develop a deep love and strong appreciation of music—a passion that will inspire them throughout their lives. We want our children to immerse themselves in playing, composing, and performing, and to dare to shed their inhibitions to become independent, collaborative musicians. At Green Park, we celebrate the creative processes of composition and performance, recognising that these experiences build perseverance, resilience, and determination—core elements of our growth mindset. We also place great emphasis on nurturing a rich multicultural awareness, exposing our pupils to a diverse range of musical artists, styles, traditions, and genres. By the time they leave our school, our children will have a treasury of happy musical memories, and they will be confident, creative, and reflective musicians who truly understand the impact of music on themselves, each other, and the world around them.
Music Implementation – Bringing Harmony to the Classroom
Our approach to music teaching begins in the Early Years, where children are given fun, engaging opportunities to explore sounds, sing collaboratively, and develop a natural sense of beat and rhythm. As our pupils progress into Key Stages 1 and 2, they engage in a carefully structured, ambitious, and engaging Music curriculum that is designed to ensure they know more, remember more, and can do more with music. Our curriculum is built around four key areas:
• Listening and Appraising: Exploring a variety of musical styles, composers, and musicians to broaden their auditory experiences.
• Engaging in Musical Activities: Developing music-specific skills through interactive games, improvisation, and creative composition.
• Singing: Encouraging vocal expression and developing pitch, rhythm, and expression.
• Performing: Providing regular opportunities for classroom, school, and public performances that allow children to share their musical talents.
Our curriculum is informed by the National Curriculum and enhanced by the Charanga Music Scheme—a resource devised by subject experts and grounded in the latest pedagogical research. We ensure that every lesson is lively, stimulating, and rich in practical experiences. Beyond the classroom, music holds a high profile at Green Park through engaging assemblies, concerts, and stage productions where our children showcase their love for singing and performing. Detailed schemes of learning, access to high-quality resources, and a wealth of musical instruments and technology support our teaching, ensuring that every child can fully explore and develop their musical talents.
Music Impact – The Lasting Benefits for Our Children
The impact of our Music curriculum is profound and far-reaching. Throughout their time at Green Park, children develop not only the technical skills and knowledge of music but also a genuine, lifelong passion for the art form. As a result, our pupils:
• Demonstrate a deep love of music and an understanding of its power to shape our identity and culture.
• Articulate their understanding of musical concepts using rich, expressive language.
• Showcase their musical abilities through a variety of independent and collaborative performances.
• Work both independently and as part of a team, taking pride in their contributions during public performances, assemblies, and concerts.
• Experience a strong sense of achievement and self-confidence in their musical skills, which extends to other areas of their education and personal development.
By the time our children leave Green Park Community Primary School, they will be equipped with a wide range of musical skills and experiences that will serve them well in the next phase of their education. We are confident that the joy and appreciation of music nurtured here will continue to resonate with them throughout their lives, leaving them with countless happy musical memories and a lasting inspiration to explore, create, and share music with the world.
