Art and Design
Art Intent – What We Want for Your Child
At Green Park Community Primary School, we believe that art is an essential part of our children’s educational experience. Creativity takes courage, and here at Green Park, we truly value and nurture that creative spirit. Our art curriculum provides every child with the opportunity to explore, experiment, and play, allowing them to express their unique personalities. We want our children to be fearless and authentic in communicating their feelings and ideas through self-expression and personal interpretation. By encouraging a natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the world, we inspire our pupils to appreciate and draw creative inspiration from nature. Our art curriculum supports our core values of personal development, perseverance, and resilience—encouraging our children to work skillfully and care about the details of their artwork while also feeling confident enough to go beyond the lines. We believe art is a universal language that connects us across cultures and time, and we aspire for our children to develop a deep understanding of its impact on our lives. Ultimately, our intention is to nurture the next generation of artists, instilling in them a lifelong love and appreciation of art.
Art Implementation – Bringing Creativity to Life in the Classroom
Our art curriculum at Green Park is designed to grow with our children from the Early Years through to Year 6, ensuring that as they progress, they know more, remember more, and can do more. We deliver a hands-on, practical curriculum rooted in first-hand experiences, where high-quality resources and materials are at the heart of every lesson.
Our curriculum is taught across four Golden Threads:
- Paper, Fabric, Metal, and Plastic: Experimenting with a range of materials to create innovative art.
- Malleable Materials: Exploring clay and other shapeable media to inspire creative forms.
- Paint and Colour: Delving into the vibrant world of colours and techniques.
- Pencil, Ink, Charcoal, and Pen: Developing drawing skills and expressive mark-making.
Through these threads, our children learn the key elements and principles of Art and Design—texture, colour, space, form, shape, line, and pattern—within thematic topics that connect with the works of diverse artists, architects, and designers from both our local community and around the world. We place great emphasis on practical exploration and the use of specialist tools and materials such as drawing pencils, canvas paper, paints, clay, and quality brushes. Children maintain progressive sketchbooks that document their creative journey, providing clear evidence of their growing skills. Art is taught in dedicated blocks of lessons, giving our pupils ample time for sustained creative exploration, and our curriculum is further enriched by regular sessions with an Artist in Residence who brings specialist expertise into our classrooms.

By the time they leave Green Park Community Primary School, our pupils will not only have a rich portfolio of creative work but also the confidence to see art as a vital, inspiring part of their lives.
