Maths Intent – Shaping Future Problem Solvers

At Green Park Community Primary School, we believe that Mathematics is a universal language that unlocks the secrets of our world. We’re committed to showing our children that maths is not only essential for everyday life—impacting technology, engineering, and financial literacy—but it also empowers them to solve problems creatively. Our goal is for every child to develop a strong mathematical fluency and the confidence to use these skills in real-world reasoning and problem solving. We want our children to enjoy Mathematics, experience success in the subject, and build resilience, all in keeping with our culture of a growth mind-set. Our high-quality curriculum ensures that all pupils:

  • Master key facts and ideas to build solid declarative knowledge.
  • Develop procedural fluency progressively across year groups and key stages.
  • Engage in regular, challenging problem-solving activities that build conditional knowledge and encourage logical, systematic thinking.

Our Maths curriculum is current, research-informed, and continually adapted to meet the diverse needs of our learners. Working with partners like the EEF and the National College, we ensure our teaching practices are innovative and adaptive, providing a strong foundation for lifelong success.

Maths Implementation – Building Confidence and Fluency in the Classroom

Our Mathematics curriculum is designed so that children know more, remember more, and can do more as they progress through our school. At Green Park, our children follow a carefully structured, sequential and small step mathematics curriculum based on, but not exclusive to, that produced by White Rose (we also use ‘Classroom Secrets’ pedagogy). We believe that creating future problem solvers starts with making core knowledge stick in long-term memory. To achieve this, our curriculum:

  • Breaks down mathematical concepts into manageable, bite-sized components to prevent cognitive overload.
  • Integrates built-in practice, retrieval, and reinforcement activities to ensure key concepts are fully embedded.
  • Is progressive and ensures every teacher understands their role in developing confident mathematicians.
  • Provides a seamless, continuous learning journey—a promise from one teacher to the next regarding curriculum coverage.
  • Is underpinned by research-based adaptive teaching methodologies, with formative assessment at its heart (because at Green Park, assessment is planning).

Children engage with Mathematics daily, and our curriculum structure provides regular opportunities to embed knowledge and build fluency. We recognise that problem solving isn’t a generic skill—it’s best nurtured within context. That’s why we offer rich, challenging mathematical problems designed to develop our pupils’ conditional knowledge and strategic thinking.

Maths Impact – Empowering Lifelong Learners

The impact of our Mathematics curriculum is evident in how our children connect their learning with the wider world. At Green Park, our teaching and learning pedagogy in Maths produces children who:

  • Are resilient mathematicians, ready to tackle challenges without giving up.
  • Become active problem solvers, using their conditional knowledge to choose the best methods for solving a variety of tasks.
  • Develop into creative thinkers who work both strategically and logically.
  • Embrace mathematical challenges with enthusiasm because of their firm foundational skills.
  • Achieve high proficiency and consistently excel in Mathematics.

We are extremely proud of our children’s achievements in Mathematics. Through continual observation and formative assessments against age-related objectives, we plan the next steps in each child’s mathematical journey, ensuring that their skills are challenged and consolidated. By the end of each key stage, every pupil at Green Park is expected to know, apply, and understand the skills and techniques specified in our curriculum, setting them on a path to lifelong learning and success.

White Rose Maths are a small group of teachers and mathematicians dedicated to developing maths education for everyone. They wan to inspire as many people as possible to love maths as much as they do.

Influenced, inspired and informed by the work of leading maths researchers and practitioners across the world, White Rose Maths brings together a team of highly experienced and passionate maths teaching experts to train, guide, help and support all those who want to make change happen in their schools.

Together, we’re building a whole new culture of deep understanding, confidence and competence in maths – a culture that produces strong, secure learning and real progress. No matter what their starting points, we help teachers and learners everywhere to achieve excellence.

Our mantra is simple:

Everyone can do maths:
Everyone Can!

As we prove this to pupils and teachers alike, we’re shaping assured, happy and resilient mathematicians who relish the challenge of maths. They become independent, reflective thinkers, whose skills not only liberate them in maths but also support them across the curriculum.

We’re committed to working together to be and give the very best, and to make a difference to every pupil.
