PSHE Intent – This Is What We Want for Your Child
At Green Park Community Primary School, we provide a warm, safe, and happy environment where every child feels empowered to share their experiences and learn from one another. We believe that understanding their rights and responsibilities is fundamental to growing into safe, confident, and responsible citizens. Our aim is for each child to learn how to keep safe, develop and maintain healthy relationships, and make informed decisions—both offline and online. We are dedicated to nurturing a growth mindset in our pupils, building resilience, independence, and self-confidence. By instilling these values from an early age, we prepare our children to enter Key Stage 3 with high aspirations and a firm belief in their own abilities. As part of our commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive environment, we ensure that our curriculum helps children understand protected characteristics and celebrate differences. Ultimately, our PSHE programme is designed to equip our children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to play a positive and successful role in today’s society.
PSHE Implementation – Bringing Learning to Life in the Classroom
Our PSHE curriculum is carefully structured to progressively enhance our children’s understanding of the world and equip them with practical skills for keeping safe and staying healthy. Delivered by class teachers, our curriculum is designed not only to meet Government guidelines but also to address the unique needs of our pupils. We structure our PSHE lessons around three key strands:
- Health and Wellbeing: Fostering physical and mental health through practical strategies and self-care.
- Relationships: Helping children develop and maintain positive relationships, build mutual respect, and understand the importance of empathy.
- Living in the Wider World: Encouraging children to be active, informed citizens who recognise the impact of their actions at home, school, and in the broader community.
From Early Years onwards, our approach to PSHE is woven throughout the school day. We use topical themes from Picture News and timely discussions to ensure that issues affecting our world are addressed promptly. Our lessons are dynamic, relying on debate, discussion, and circle time to give every child a voice and ensure that their opinions are heard. We integrate elements of the Rights Respecting Schools Agenda, British Values, Global Goals, and an understanding of protected characteristics into our teaching. Regular visits from community-based experts—such as emergency services, first aid workshops, and pedestrian safety sessions—complement our curriculum and provide real-life learning experiences. Through these varied approaches, our children learn not only to keep themselves safe but also to actively contribute to a respectful and inclusive community.
PSHE Impact – The Lasting Benefits for Our Children
The impact of our PSHE curriculum at Green Park is profound. Our children grow into well-rounded individuals who are equipped to make sound decisions in a variety of everyday situations. They come to understand the importance of the British values—democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, rule of law, and liberty—as well as their own rights and responsibilities as young citizens. Through our engaging and adaptive PSHE lessons, our pupils learn to look after their mental health, manage their emotions, and appreciate the value of diversity. They develop healthy, positive relationships with peers, both now and for the future, and gain the skills necessary to navigate the online world responsibly.
Our PSHE curriculum and teaching approaches result in children who:
- Confidently tackle real-life situations using the skills and attributes they have learned.
- Recognise and uphold the core British values in their daily lives.
- Understand their rights as children and the importance of protected characteristics, alongside pressing environmental issues linked to the Global Goals.
- Take proactive steps to look after their mental well-being and manage their emotions.
- Embrace diversity and build positive, lasting relationships.
- Navigate the digital world safely, recognising the impact of their online footprint.
We are proud that every child at Green Park Community Primary School benefits from a high-quality, adaptive PSHE curriculum. This programme not only creates a respectful and nurturing classroom environment but also ensures that our pupils leave our school ready to thrive in an ever-changing world—confident, informed, and prepared to make a positive difference in their communities.
