The Early Years Curriculum
Welcome to our Early Years Foundation Stage at Green Park Community Primary School, where every little learner’s journey is celebrated. In Reception, children aged 4 to 5 experience a unique curriculum that blends play and practical learning. Our dedicated Early Years team works closely together to create a warm, safe, and secure environment where every child feels at home and ready to learn.
At Green Park, we believe that early learning is all about nurturing curiosity, creativity, and confidence. We focus on helping each child reach their full potential by supporting their emotional, social, physical, and cognitive development. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and inspiring, fostering a love of learning and encouraging every child to flourish.
We build our approach on key principles:
• Individual Growth: We recognise that every child is different. Our teaching is tailored to meet each child’s unique needs, ensuring they feel valued and understood.
• Emotional and Social Wellbeing: With a focus on building positive relationships, we help children learn to manage their feelings, build friendships, and understand the importance of safety and making good choices. Each child has a Key Person who provides personal support, helping them feel confident and secure.
• A Stimulating Environment: Our indoor and outdoor spaces are designed to be safe, engaging, and full of opportunities for exploration. We constantly plan and check on each child’s progress to make sure our learning environments continue to inspire.
• Learning Through Play: We believe the best learning happens through play and exploration. With plenty of adult support, children are encouraged to use their imagination, make decisions, and develop creative and critical thinking skills.
At Green Park, we truly value our family partnerships, working hand in hand with parents and carers to support every child’s learning journey. We’re excited to be a part of your child’s early years and look forward to building a lifelong love of learning together.

Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework until they enter Year 1 or are ready to move onto the National Curriculum.
The EYFS Framework is a statutory document that outlines the areas of learning to be taught by schools, pre-schools and independent childcare professionals.
It identifies three prime areas of learning:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
and four specific areas, which work to support the prime areas:
- Literacy
- Maths
- Understaning the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
The Framework is based upon the following overarching principles:
- Every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured;
- Children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships;
- Children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers; children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates.
- The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.
To read the full documentation, please see the Foundation Years website or the Department for Education website.
As well as the statutory Framework, the EYFS bases its teaching and learning on the 'Development Matters' document, which can be read here.
