Year 5 Term 2 Overview: Fallen Fields and WW1 Exploration

Term 2 has been an exciting and enriching time for Year 5, as students have delved into the historical and emotional journey of World War 1 through their topic "Fallen Fields." Alongside their historical studies, they've enjoyed a variety of cross-curricular experiences that have allowed them to expand their knowledge, skills, and understanding in numerous areas. Here's a recap of their busy and rewarding term:

History: Fallen Fields – World War 1

In their "Fallen Fields" topic, Year 5 have explored the causes, events, and aftermath of World War 1, with a particular focus on the personal stories of soldiers and the impact on families and communities. They have learned about the significant battles, the role of the trenches, and the historical importance of memorials.

A highlight of this topic was a visit to Dover's war memorial site, where students were able to pay their respects and learn more about the individuals commemorated there. Additionally, the class visited a replica WW1 trench, which provided an immersive experience of what life was like for soldiers during the war. These visits greatly enhanced their understanding of the subject, bringing history to life in a meaningful way.

Science: Forces

In Science, Year 5 have been investigating the concept of forces, learning about different types of forces such as gravity, friction, and air resistance. They have explored how forces affect movement and have conducted practical experiments to observe and measure forces in action. The students have worked on applying their understanding of forces to real-life situations, from the movement of objects to the forces involved in various sporting activities.

Physical Education: Cricket

This term, Year 5 has had the opportunity to learn new cricket skills under the guidance of a specialist teacher. The focus has been on developing key techniques such as batting, bowling, and fielding, along with improving teamwork and coordination. Students have enjoyed applying their skills in friendly matches and developing a greater appreciation for the sport.

Music: Recorder

In Music, Year 5 has been learning to play the recorder, gradually mastering new notes and rhythms. They have been developing their ability to read musical notation and play simple melodies, building on their understanding of music theory. The students have made excellent progress and are excited to continue their musical journey in the coming terms.

Trips and Events

The term has also been filled with wonderful trips and events that have helped enrich the Year 5 experience:

  • Pantomime Visit: Year 5 students attended a local pantomime, a festive and fun experience that gave them the chance to enjoy a lively theatrical performance full of humour and entertainment.

  • Christmas Concert: The students participated in the school’s Christmas concert, where they had the chance to showcase their talents and enjoy performing with other year groups. It was a fantastic celebration of the season!

  • EYFS Nativity: Year 5 were also delighted to watch the EYFS Nativity, a heart-warming performance that captured the true spirit of Christmas and provided an opportunity for the older students to support and enjoy the younger children’s hard work.

We are incredibly proud of the Year 5 students for their dedication, enthusiasm, and positive attitude throughout the term, and we look forward to more exciting adventures in the new year!
