Year 5 Term 1 Overview: Allotments and Adventures!

Wow, what a fantastic start to the year for our Year 5 pupils! This term, they’ve immersed themselves in an exciting topic centered around Allotments, with a heavy focus on geography and agriculture. Let’s take a stroll through all the amazing things they’ve been up to!

Exploring the Farming Industry The adventure kicked off with a visit to Brogdale Farm, where the children had the chance to explore the ins and outs of apple growing and even tried their hand at juicing! This hands-on experience brought their learning to life, showing them the importance of local agriculture.

Science in Action In science, Year 5 delved into the growth of different plants and learned about plant reproduction and pest control. They discovered how vital these concepts are to successful farming and gardening, making connections to their allotment studies.

Creative Writing and English In English, creativity blossomed as students crafted non-chronological reports about allotments, wrote a descriptive harvest poem, and even spun some imaginative tales with alternative fairy tales. Their ability to weave stories and information together truly shone this term!

Maths Fun Maths was all about place value, addition and subtraction. Year 5 tackled these concepts with enthusiasm, finding ways to apply their skills to real-world scenarios related to their allotment theme.

Delicious DT The children got hands-on in Design Technology (DT), focusing on food technology. They whipped up a seasonal crumble and soup, showcasing their culinary skills while learning about using fresh, local ingredients. Yum!

Forest School Adventures Every week, our Year 5 students enjoyed Forest School sessions, where they explored nature and developed valuable skills in teamwork and problem-solving. These sessions have fostered a love for the outdoors and a deeper appreciation for the environment.

Reflecting on Beliefs In RE, Year 5 pondered the question, “Why do some people believe God exists?” This thoughtful exploration encouraged students to share their ideas and beliefs in a supportive environment, promoting understanding and respect for diverse perspectives.
