Lord's Cricket - London

Year 6 has an amazing day at the Lords cricket trip to London on Monday 17th June 2024.

A trip to The Lord’s Cricket Ground

On Monday 17th June, we were privileged to visit the famous Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.  Lord’s is the home of English Cricket and we were invited to spend the day there by Kent Cricket Club as part of the Chance to Shine Charity.

30 children from Year 5 and 6 joined Mr Hawkins, Mrs Hawkins, Mr Bunyard and Tom Waters (our cricket coach) on the trip.

We left the school very early in the morning and drove in the school minibuses all the way, stopping off at Maidstone for a quick toilet break.  The traffic in London was awful, but we managed to get a glimpse of Canary Wharf and the O2 on our way.

When we arrived at Lord’s we were welcomed into the members’ area (only members are usually admitted!).  Mr Hawkins was probably the most excited of us all!  We met up with children from 12 other schools and listened to an assembly all about cricket.  We then moved off to our first activity- a cricket game at the indoor cricket centre.  The centre is where England Cricketers practise before they play in matches, so it was great to use the facilities there.  We played a game called Rapid Fire Cricket, which was fast-paced and tremendous fun.

We moved to our next activity- Drumba.  This was a mixture of drumming and Zumba.  It was brilliant, but exhausting.  All the children and adults took part.  Best of all, we were joined by the England Women’s Captain- Heather Knight.  Mr Hawkins made sure he got a selfie with her!

Our third activity followed a lunch break- we were starving and enjoyed sitting in the stands, over-looking the hallowed Lord’s pitch whilst we ate our lunches.

We headed off for a tour of the stands.  Our first stop was the Media Centre.  Positioned at the top of a high tower, we climbed many steps to get to the centre, where the world’s media watch and report on the games taking place on the pitch.  The view was amazing.

After this, we went to the visitors’ changing room.  The room was quite small, considering there could be over 20 cricketers in there with all their equipment.  On the far wall was the Honours Board.  Names of famous cricketers covered the board, showing those who had scored a 100 runs or taken 5 wickets in an innings.  Again, Mr Hawkins was in his element!  We even got to stand on the players’’ balcony, where many famous cricketers have celebrated before.

Our final activity and possibly our favourite, was the chance to actually play cricket on the Lord’s pitch.  The grass was like nothing we’d ever experienced before- a carpet of lush green.  Perfect in every way.  To be able to bat and bowl on the pitch, just like Jimmy Anderson and Joe Root, was a real honour.

After an amazing day, we headed back home, feeling very tired but very happy to have had such a brilliant experience.
