Term 2 - News

Update: Year Three Term Two 2024

Year Three have had another very busy term! A new term comes with new topics… so let’s have a look at what they have been up to:

Term Two began with the topic ‘Through the Ages. The children have learnt about the very earliest parts of human history, beginning with the Stone Age and then moving into the Bronze Age. This period of time is known as pre-historic, as it occurred before the advent of written historical records. The children have seen how all the knowledge we have about this time comes from artefacts and careful investigation by archaeologists.

The children took part in a Stone Age immersion day at the start of the topic, where they were able to take part in Cave Painting, creating their own Woolly Mammoths using milk bottles and began to learn about some of the key vocabulary that would be used in this topic.

In English this term, the children have learnt about poetry. They created their own Kenning Poems to describe cavemen who lived in the Stone Age, using noun-verb phrases like ‘animal-hunter’ and ‘cave-dweller’. They have also created some fact files based on their research about life in prehistoric Britain, using the key features of a non-chronological report to set out their information.

In science, the children have been learning about bones, joints, muscles and skeletons and about the foods that different animals like to eat. They have created simple food chains and investigated both animal and human skeletons, identifying features and comparing them to each other, thinking about the things we need our skeleton for, including: movement, protection of internal organs and keeping us unpright.

The children got into the Christmas spirit with a visit to St Andrew’s church to take part in a Christingle service with our Rev. Melissa. They made their own Christingles, taking them down to the church and lighting the candle. This was followed by another successful Carols on the Playground where they got to showcase the songs we have been learning. Finally, they visited the Tower Theatre in Folkestone to watch the pantomime Aladdin, where we had the whole theatre to ourselves!

Overall, it’s been another brilliant term for Year Three, full of learning, creativity, and memorable experiences. The children have worked incredibly hard and have enjoyed every moment. We are all looking forward to Term Three and the final part of the ‘Through the Ages’ topic.
