Term 2 News

Update: Year Two Term Two 2024

Year Two have had another very busy term! They are now used to the daily routine and confidently move around the corridor when swapping for Maths, Phonics and Reading groups. A new term comes with new topics, so let’s have a look at what they have been up to:

Term Two began with the topic ‘Magnificent Monarchs’. The children learnt about how we came to have a royal family and how their role and power has changed over time. They met some important Kings and Queens from the past and researched some facts about how long they ruled for and whether they were a popular or unpopular monarch.

The children took part in a Kings and Queens immersion day at the start of the topic, where they were introduced to some of the key vocabulary they would be using and explored images of Kings and Queens from the past. They decorated crowns and practiced the role of a monarch by creating their own rules and laws.

In English this term, the children have learnt about writing instructions. They created their own ‘Revolting Recipes’ with a whole range of gruesome ingredients, making sure to include lots of detail in their instructions. Later on in the term, the children wrote their own stories about going on holiday, based on the book Monster Max’s Shark Spaghetti. To round off the term, the children learnt about the features of a letter and used these to write their own letters to Father Christmas.

In science, the children have been investigating mixing and changing states. They created ice cream in a bag, using ice and salt to create super cold temperatures and made jelly by melting and then setting the mixture. They also made their own scented playdough and explored how materials can be manipulated by stretching, bending, twisting and squashing!

The children got into the Christmas spirit with a visit to St Andrew’s church to take part in a Christingle service with our Rev. Melissa. They made their own Christingles, taking them down to the church and lighting the candle. This was followed by another successful Carols on the Playground where they got to showcase the songs we have been learning. Finally, they visited the Tower Theatre in Folkestone to watch the pantomime Aladdin, where we had the whole theatre to ourselves!

Overall, it’s been another brilliant term for Year Two, full of learning, creativity, and memorable experiences. The children have worked incredibly hard and have enjoyed every moment. We are all looking forward to Term Three and the ‘Street Detectives’ topic.
