Year 1 Term One 2024

Our Year 1s have had a fantastic start to the year, looking at the topic “Paws, Claws, and Whiskers.”

Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:

In English, the children have been exploring books like The Tiger Who Came to Tea and Superworm. They've been learning to sequence and retell these stories, write short recounts, make booklets, and even write lists and instructions. A mysterious creature even made an appearance, which they got to name and care for!

Maths has been all about getting to grips with numbers up to 30. They’ve worked on counting, comparing amounts, and even started tackling addition and subtraction using the part-whole method. The children are building some solid maths skills that they'll keep adding to throughout the year.

For Science, they've been exploring the human body and our senses, drawing and labelling body parts, and learning to describe animal bodies. They’ve had fun sorting animals into different groups and spotting similarities and differences between humans and animals.

Art has had an animal twist this term! Inspired by the topic "Mix It!", they've been experimenting with mixing colours, creating collages, drawing, and even making animal masks. In DT, they designed animal enclosures and created models of their favourite animals.

In PE, we have been working on our agility, balance, and coordination. The children have been running, jumping, throwing, and even competing in little challenges against each other. Plus, Hyde class enjoyed their first swimming sessions.

The children had a tea party with a “tiger,” created a wormery, went on a butterfly hunt, and visited Wingham Wildlife Park to see animals up close.

Overall, it's been a fun and adventurous start to the year, and we're looking forward to seeing what Term 2 brings!
