Year 3 Term One 2024
Update: Year Three Term One 2024
Year Three have had a busy start to the year! They have settled into new routines and are engaging in a range of new subjects, including Spanish. With a new year, comes a range of exciting new topics to learn about… so let’s have a look at what they’ve been up to:
Term One began with the topic ‘Mighty Metals’. The children were able to complete lots of investigation work with this topic, as it covers practical science including magnetism and forces. As part of their learning about push and pull forces, the children took a walk to the local playground to test out their theories. They enjoyed using magnets to search out which materials are magnetic and learning that not all metals are attracted to a magnet!
The children took part in an Iron Man themed immersion day at the start of the topic, where they were able to construct their own Iron Giants, create simple magnet games and explore the text by Ted Hughes that was used as part of their English learning.
Later on in the term, the children learnt about light and dark in their science lessons. They found out about why we have day and night, and how the sun and other light sources create shadows. Using their own shadow puppets, the children investigated what happens when the object moves closer to or further away from the light source.
The children were lucky to have a visit from the brilliant Emma from FabScience, who delivered an engaging workshop all about forces. She brought with her a whole range of simple science experiments which wowed the children and then explained the real science behind them. All the children had great fun with this day and particularly enjoyed making ping-pong balls float and paperclips hover mid air!
In DT this term, the children were exploring moving parts. They have researched different types of pulley and lever, to create their own moving piece of artwork. To practice, they made Iron Man heads with changing eyes and pop-up tab books. Then, using tabs and split pins, the children have designed moving elements to their creative backgrounds.
Overall, it’s been a fantastic first term for Year Three, full of learning, creativity, and memorable experiences. The children have worked incredibly hard and have enjoyed every moment. We are all looking forward to Term Two and the ‘Through the Ages’ topic.
